Assaya Sangha in September
Dear Sangha Sisters:
Over the last few months as I've had the opportunity to teach with the sangha, I've been so moved by the support and welcome you offer each other, as well as the curiosity and investigation that you bring into the practice. Together, we get to really see: what does freedom look like for our unique mind, body and heart?
This is exactly as the Buddha taught. In the time of the Buddha, this practice was not a one-size-fits-all pursuit. And honestly, this is part of why I love this path. Each one of us is unique, and each one of us gets to develop our own relationship to the Dharma - no cookie cutter version of ourselves or our practice required!
When a rich merchant asked the Buddha for teachings, he shared generosity practice before even touching meditation. When approached by a grieving mother, the Buddha led her into the waiting arms of her village. When supporting a practitioner who was having great difficulty memorizing the teachings, he provided the experiential exercise to embody the teachings. Each teaching was individual to the person seeking the dharma.
Together, we get to explore how the teachings can support each one of us as individuals, with unique experiences, backgrounds, and life circumstances. We get to decide what the right ingredients are for our practice. Like Hafiz writes:
You carry
All the ingredients
To turn your life into a nightmare -
Don't mix them!
You carry all the ingredients
To turn your existence into joy
Mix them, mix
Them!
Wishing you all the ingredients you need,
Juliana Sloane
